| Titanium was discovered in 1791, by William Gregor, and then later
named by Martin Klaproth in 1795.
Titanium has a low density. It is heavier than aluminum but not quite
as heavy as iron. Titanium is very important to the military, navy,
and aerospace industry.
Titanium has many uses, such as in paint, floor coverings, paper, plastics,
porcelain enamels, rubber, welding rods, machinery, propeller shafts, rigging,
and other parts of ships that touch sea water, the metal structure
in airplanes and space shuttles, as skeletal surgery because titanium does
not react with flesh and bone. TiO2 has now replaced "white lead"
and zinc oxide. White lead has been banned in most countries because it
is really toxic.
The price of titanium metal powder (99.95%) is about $100/lb.
