Historical Facts and Elements Uses:
Nilbium is used in some stainless steels, engineering system metals, alloys with non metals, arc welding rods, and body art. The name Niobium was adopted officially in 1950 but some commercial producers still like to refer to it as columbium. Niobium is a shiny, white, soft and ductile metal. It takes on a bluish tinge when exposed to air at room temperature for a long time. Discovered in an ore called columbite sent to England in the 1750's by John Winthrop to Charles Harchett. The first prepared Niobium metal was made in 1864 by Blombstrod, who reduced the chloride by heating it in a hydrogen atmosphere.
