Use mathematics in practical applications.
Description of the class
for parents
Using the local technological and engineering resources, students will
visit Hill Air Force Base Museum, Space Dynamics Lab, Mitek, and first dam to
learn about machines and engineering works that have changed our world. They
will then have the opportunity to apply their knowledge through projects such
as bridge building, rocket design, and construction of machines/robots. Children
will use their current grade level mathematics and technology skills while applying
and studying current engineering products. At the conclusions of the class,
children will have many projects that were made in class as well as a Power
Point portfolio of their projects and activities throughout the class.

schemes.
Description of the class
for parents
Students will spend four days and
three nights of the two weeks backpacking in the backcountry. Students will
hike over 25 miles. Students will use natural resources of the surrounding area
to learn survival skills, calculate and track locations using mathematical skills,
identify and create flower guides for community use, and integrate reading and
writing into challenging and stimulating activities. Through the culmination
of all the students’ experiences, the students will use appropriate research
skills, written mechanics, and technology skills, to create and produce electronic
multimedia or webquest presentations using video, digital images and audio.
Children will experience the use of current technologies such as global positioning
systems, PowerPoint, hand held computers, and probes in practical applications
in solving problems.
